The Design Interviews (“DI”) interviewed Mohamad Montazeri (“MM”) about his innovation, “DoodLight”. You can read the interview below.
“DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
MM : It may have happened to all of us that we want to draw a certain shape, table, chart or font on a piece of paper that is difficult or time consuming for us to draw. Sometimes it may even be very different from what we guessed or expected because of our inability to put it on paper, or after drawing the elements on paper and seeing the reality of what we had in mind, we were not satisfied with our layout and came to the conclusion that I wish I had used a different layout. My main idea starts here. First, select the elements on the Doodlight mobile app page which is the same as paper proportions. Then you can connect the mobile Bluetooth to Doodlight and transfer it to the product. Now Doodlight uses a laser to display your design on the desired paper and you can see your design on paper and in real dimensions. If you are satisfied with your layout, all you have to do is pick up your pen and start drawing lines by following the laser lights on the paper. When done, you have the design ready and it is exactly the same as what you had in mind!
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
MM : In addition to the concept, the performance and beauty of the product has been very important to me. The product is too small to carry with you. In terms of form design, Doodlight has the character to convey the feeling I have in mind: “Doodlight is a little friend who is always with your journal.”
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
MM : Bring Doodlight to mass production.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
MM : Its design process took about 4 months. But the idea took months.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
MM : At first there was no design order, the design of this product started with an idea and its purpose was to solve the problem and respond to the needs of users in this field. After focusing on the idea, I came to the conclusion that it could be a successful product.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
MM : Currently, due to the Covid19 pandemic, it has become a bit difficult for me to decide to respond to the production proposals of this product. I need more time to decide. But I still welcome reasonable and good production opportunities.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
MM : Good idea, feeling the user needs and my personal interest in such topics.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
MM : It is not possible to specify a specific case, but certainly like any other designer, it has had an indirect impact on its surroundings.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
MM : Doodlight is for those who want to draw anything hard or time consuming with the best quality on paper. To help those who want to complete their journal pages, or those who want to practice drawing or calligraphy, or even for more complex tasks such as drawing. This product has solved many problems and met many needs in this field.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
MM : This product does not have a similar example and is the first product that is designed to meet the needs of users in this field and solve their problems.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
MM : Doodlight consists of two separate words whose meanings are in accordance with the function and purpose of the product: The first part is “Dood” which is an abbreviation of the word “Doodle” and means hand-drawn lines and patterns on paper. The second part is “light”, which refers to the phrase “laser light”, which actually reminds the mechanism of the product. The two sections “Dood” and “light” are placed next to each other so that when pronouncing the product name, the letter “L” is the end of the first word and the beginning of the second word. That is, it is both the boundary separating two words from each other and connecting them! Doodle + Light = Doodlight
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
MM : 3D Modeling software, rendering software, presentation software as well as simulator and analysis.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
MM : Perfect performance and good concept, idea, form have perfected this product.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
MM : I designed this product individually, but in areas such as data collection and final analysis about the function of the laser part of the product, I consulted several experts in this field.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
MM : Doodlight is a digital product and technology undoubtedly plays a big role in it. Doodlight application for mobile, mobile and product communication with the help of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, as well as displaying the desired shapes by Doodlight on paper, is one of the most important and bold technology roles in this product.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
MM : Yes, the most important part of the test and analysis was the laser and the adjusting lens.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
MM : One of the most important challenges was minimizing the product, which made the use of laser technology a bit difficult, but in the end the problem was solved.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
MM : I have participated in many international design competitions and won many awards. I like the challenges of world competitions and that is why I participated in this competition.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
MM : A successful designer is always and everywhere learning. Naturally, this project was also instructive for me. The challenges of working with lasers and lenses and their proper performance were technically and engineeringly instructive for me.
